HP has recently unveiled its HP Z840 Workstation: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/workstations/z840.html (date tbd), a new release in their line of Z series workstations “built for high end computing and visualization.” What makes the Z840 desirable is its price to performance ratio, delivering well beyond its cost. The Z840, compared to its competitors such as the New Mac Pro, has the potential to surpass them in a multitude of arenas.
Let’s begin with the speed. The fast performance stems from the ability of the Z840 to support up to 2TB (terabytes) of RAM, and up to 36 CPU cores. The HP workstation will also be compatible with any video card, unlike the New Apple Mac Pro which can use only AMD. In addition HP has added Thunderbolt Ports to the new Z840.
VFX’s Engineers are expecting the HP Z840 to be one of the most advanced workstations, jumping leaps and bounds compared to predecessors the Z800 and 820. Anticipating its release, at the start of shipping, VFX Engineers will test the new workstation and follow up with their review.
